How often should you change your pad?

There are various theories around do’s and don’ts during the menstrual cycle. Whatever theory you may follow, the central focus should always be the hygiene. One of the most common questions that arise during menstrual cycle is, how often one should change the pad?

This is a very tricky question as each individual is different and each one of us experience period differently. The frequency of changing the pad will depend upon cycle to cycle and each day of your period. It also depends on the type of pad you are using.

There are three major reasons why one should change the pad often:

  1. The pad is completely wet
  2. The dampness is making you uncomfortable
  3. Most importantly, hygiene matters

The absorbency of the pad you use is very crucial during your periods because that will make you feel comfortable for a longer duration. Checking your pad regularly (once in every 2-3 hrs) for any leaks or if the pad is completely wet.

Body has a natural tendency to indicate you if the pad you are wearing is comfortable or not. As you become more comfortable and familiar with your menstrual cycle, you will be able to judge better.

One should know the flow and the absorbencies of the pad used during the menstrual cycle. Sanitary pads come with a range of absorbency capacity. One should be able to choose the right pad for themselves. The pads can be classified into the following:

  1. Overnight pad: Overnight pads are usually longer than regular pads so that it can absorb all night. It should be able to last an entire night’s sleep even during your heavy flow. If needed, you can also wear an overnight pad in the day time if you are comfortable with longer pads.
  2. Heavy flow: Your flow is usually more during the start of a period. Pads meant for overnight and heavy absorbency pads can be used that will offer more protection than regular flow pads. You may require changing it in 3-4 hours or even earlier depending on how heavy the flow is.
  3. Regular flow: During your regular flow, one can wear a heavy or regular absorbency pad which will offer more protection. You may want to change your pad every 3-4 hours of even earlier depending on how heavy your flow is.
  4. Light flow or Spotting: Wearing a regular or thinner pad should last anywhere from 4-6 hours. If your flow is very light and there are only a few spots on your pad even after 4 hours, you can continue wearing the thinner pad if you are comfortable doing so. Just keep in mind it is a good idea to change your pad regularly.

We hope this helps!!
